Swansfield News 9.20.24

Mon, 09/23/2024 - 11:41am

Good Afternoon Swansfield,

As a school we are always progress monitoring students, seeking feedback on the programs we offer, and we strive to be the best school in this county, state, and country. One measure that we use each school year to assess our academic progress is results of our state assessment (MCAP) that students in grades 3-5 take each spring. Below we have highlighted the progress our students have made over the past two school years.

New Information

Flu Clinic

Each year, the Howard County Public School System partners with the Maryland Partnership for Prevention to bring flu immunizations into our schools for students.  This year, they will also be offering the latest Covid vaccine if it is available at the time of the clinics.  The clinic at Swansfield will be held on Thursday, October 24, during school hours.  If you would like your child to be vaccinated against the flu and/or Covid at this link https://www.marylandvax.org/appointment/en/reg/0717162592. You are not required to provide your child’s insurance information.  If you have any concerns about the new Covid vaccine, you are advised to speak with your child’s pediatrician. All in-school clinics will be closed to registration one week before the clinic date to allow our health room staff time to review and prepare the consents and make sure enough vaccines are ordered.

If you wish to cancel your child’s appointment after then, please call the nurse at your child’s school.  If you have any questions OR, if you register but then need to cancel your appointment, please call your school’s health room at 410-313-5621.

Grades 4 & 5 Receiving MCAP Scores today

Students in grades 4 & 5 who participated in the Spring 2024 Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) will be bringing home score reports today.  The reports show the prior grade level’s understanding in math and English language arts. These assessments are just one measure of your child's performance and provide you with insight into your child's level of proficiency. Federal accountability requires that students assess annually in grades 3-8 and once in high school.  Please visit HCPSS MCAP for more information.

The Green Beanz

The Green Beanz (Swansfield‘s environmental team) are looking for volunteers to help with our NexTrex challenge! We are collecting plastic film to be recycled and made into different building materials such as benches, deck boards, and furniture. We’re hoping to collect 1000 pounds as we have done in the past two years. We need volunteers to pick up the plastic in the vestibule at the front of the school on Thursdays. Please look at the sign-up sheet below to pick a day, or two,  if you may be able to help. Thank you so much! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0B4FA9A929ABF5C43-50961982-nextrex#/

FARMS Forms

Many HCPSS families are eligible to participate in the Free and Reduced Price Meals (FARMs) program, which provides children with a wide range of benefits including free or discounted college tuition, testing and application fees, academic and athletic program fees and many others in addition to free or discounted meals.

In addition, SES is a Title I school; this means we receive extra funds to support learning. PLEASE complete the FARMS application. We use these funds for additional staff, family programming, student activities and much more. Our Title I status is based on the percentage of families who qualify for FARMS.
